How Retractable Screens Work
A retractable privacy screen consists of a housing, roller barrel, screen fabric, side guides, and bottom bar. Here's how each component works.
Housing & Roller
A compact aluminum housing mounts above the opening. Inside, the screen fabric wraps around a spring-tensioned or motorized roller barrel. When retracted, the screen is completely hidden inside the housing.
Screen Fabric
High-density mesh fabric blocks UV rays, reduces glare, and acts as a barrier against insects — while still allowing airflow and outward visibility. Fabrics are rated for UV resistance, wind load, and four-season outdoor use.
Side Guides & Tracks
Extruded aluminum tracks on each side keep the fabric taut and prevent flapping in wind. The sealed channel design also prevents insects from entering around the edges.
Weighted Bottom Bar
A heavy-gauge aluminum bottom bar keeps the screen anchored and creates a seal at the base. Some models include a locking mechanism for added security in high-wind environments.
