Roll-Up Shutters

The Most Versatile Security & Weather Protection System

Roll-up shutters are the foundation of what we do at Canada Shutter Pros. Each system is custom-measured on-site and fabricated from high-grade extruded aluminum to fit your exact opening — windows, garage doors, patio doors, storefronts, cabanas, boathouses, and more.

When closed, interlocking aluminum slats form a solid, weather-tight barrier that deters break-ins, blocks storms, insulates against heat and cold, and significantly reduces noise. When open, the shutter rolls into a compact housing mounted above the opening — completely out of sight.

With over 500 installations across the GTA and a perfect 5.0 Google rating, we've built shutters for everything from downtown Toronto laneways to lakeside boathouses in Muskoka. Every project is handled directly by the owners — no subcontractors, no middlemen.

How It Works

How Roll-Up Shutters Work

A roll-up shutter system consists of four main components: the housing box, the barrel (shaft), the slat curtain, and the side guides. Here's how they work together.

Diagram showing how roll-up shutters work

Housing Box

A compact aluminum enclosure mounted above the opening. Contains the barrel, motor (if motorized), and the rolled-up slat curtain when the shutter is open. Available in several profiles to match your building's aesthetic.

Barrel & Motor

The slat curtain wraps around a steel barrel inside the housing. Manual systems use a spring-balanced strap, crank rod, or tape winch to raise and lower the curtain. Motorized systems use a quiet tubular motor built into the barrel — operated via wall switch, remote control, or smart home integration.

Slat Curtain

Interlocking aluminum slats travel in reinforced side guides and coil around the barrel. When fully closed, the slats lock together to form a rigid, weather-tight panel. Available in solid aluminum or foam-filled profiles for enhanced insulation and sound dampening.

Side Guides

Extruded aluminum channels mounted on each side of the opening. The slat curtain travels within these guides, ensuring smooth, rattle-free operation and a tight seal against wind, rain, and intrusion.

Benefits

Why Roll-Up Shutters?

A single system that delivers security, weather protection, insulation, noise reduction, and privacy.

Custom-Built to Fit

Every shutter is measured on-site and fabricated to your exact dimensions. No adapters, no gaps, no off-the-shelf guesswork.

Motorized or Manual

Quiet tubular motors with remote, wall switch, or smart home control. Manual crank, strap, and spring-loaded options also available.

Built for Canadian Weather

Extruded aluminum construction resists corrosion, road salt, and freeze-thaw cycles. Foam-core slats add insulation and reduce condensation.

Security & Break-In Deterrence

Interlocking slats lock together to form a rigid barrier. Significantly more resistant to forced entry than standard doors or windows.

Noise Reduction

A closed shutter creates a sound barrier that reduces street noise, construction noise, and general outdoor sound intrusion.

Energy Efficiency

Closed shutters add an insulating air gap at every opening. Foam-core slats provide higher R-values, reducing heating costs in winter and cooling costs in summer.

UV & Light Control

Block 100% of sunlight to protect furniture, flooring, and artwork from UV fading. Adjust partially for filtered light.

5-Year Warranty

Every installation is backed by our comprehensive 5-year warranty covering materials, motor, and workmanship. We service what we install.

Choose Your Duty Level

Solid Shutters

All solid shutters are custom-fabricated from extruded aluminum. Select the duty level that fits your security and application needs — we'll recommend the right profile at your free consultation.

Light duty solid aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile

Standard

Consider when: Privacy, shade, visual deterrence & insulation are the priority

Designed for residential shading, privacy, and weather protection where high security is not the primary concern. Also a good fit for counter pass-through areas where a slim housing is preferred.

Medium duty foam-filled aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile

Security Grade

Consider when: You want weather, pest & wind protection with a meaningful security upgrade

Our most versatile profile. Handles residential and commercial windows, doors, and counters. The right choice when you want solid protection from the elements alongside a real deterrent against break-ins.

Heavy duty reinforced aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile

High-Security

Consider when: Maximum forced-entry resistance or severe storm protection is required

Built for high-security and severe weather environments. The go-to for cannabis dispensaries, pharmacies, electronics retailers, medical storage, and coastal or storm-prone properties where failure is not an option.

Large area-door aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile for oversized openings

Area Doors

Consider when: The opening is too wide or tall for a standard profile

Engineered for garages, laneway doors, and wide commercial entrances. Increased structural strength, a built-in locking mechanism, and a self-adjusting rolling carriage ensure smooth, secure operation across large spans.

Single-walled non-insulated aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile

Single-Walled (Non-Insulated)

Consider when: You need solid security without insulation, in a single-wall aluminum profile

A thicker single-wall extruded aluminum slat with no foam core. Delivers a genuine security barrier in applications where thermal insulation isn't needed — commercial storefronts, workshops, and interior partitions. More economical than the double-walled profile while still well above a budget-grade shutter.

Double-walled non-insulated aluminum roll-up shutter slat profile

Double-Walled (Non-Insulated)

Consider when: You need added rigidity and impact resistance without the cost of a foam-filled slat

A hollow double-wall extruded aluminum slat. Stiffer and more impact-resistant than single-wall, providing a stronger security barrier while keeping weight and cost down — ideal for storefronts, workshops, and industrial openings.

Airflow & Visibility

Perforated & Grille Options

When airflow, natural light, or storefront visibility matters. Six curtain styles — all provide security while keeping your space open or visually distinctive.

Roll-up shutter with small round perforation pattern

Small

Best for: Windows, storefronts, counter enclosures

Small round punched holes in solid aluminum slats. Allows airflow and a subtle degree of visibility while maintaining a near-solid appearance from the street.

Roll-up shutter with large perforation pattern for maximum airflow and visibility

Large

Best for: Commercial storefronts, parking structures

Larger punched holes for maximum airflow and clear interior visibility. Ideal where security cameras and patrol need sightlines into the space after hours.

Roll-up shutter with clear polycarbonate links for full see-through visibility

Clear

Best for: Retail display windows, jewelry, pharmacy

Fully transparent grille links provide complete see-through visibility. Protects against entry without blocking window displays or interior lighting.

Roll-up shutter with decorative window-pane grille pattern

Window

Best for: Retail facades, commercial storefronts

A decorative grille shaped to resemble window panes. Adds architectural character to a storefront while providing full security coverage.

Roll-up shutter with clean straight horizontal bar link pattern

Straight

Best for: Modern storefronts, commercial applications

Clean horizontal bar links in a uniform straight pattern. A modern, minimal aesthetic suited to contemporary storefronts and commercial facades.

Roll-up shutter with offset brick-pattern grille links

Brick

Best for: Heritage buildings, traditional storefronts

An offset link pattern that replicates the visual texture of brickwork. Suited to heritage buildings and facades where a traditional material finish is desired.

Options

Operation Types

Choose the operation method that fits your needs and budget. We recommend motorized for daily-use openings and larger shutters.

Detachable hand crank rod for manually opening a roll-up shutter

Hand Crank Rod

A detachable crank rod connects to a gearbox at the side of the shutter. Turn the crank to raise or lower the curtain. Best for windows and smaller openings used occasionally.

Pull strap and tape winch used to manually operate a roll-up shutter

Strap / Tape Winch

A woven strap winds around a spring-loaded spool mounted inside the wall. Pull the strap to lower the shutter; release to let the spring retract it. Most common in European residential installations.

Spring-loaded roll-up shutter opened and closed by lifting the bottom bar

Spring-Loaded (Push-Up)

A torsion spring inside the barrel counterbalances the weight of the curtain. Simply push the bottom bar up to open or pull it down to close. No cranks, straps, or motors needed.
